Honouring Memory Through Action: Sisters in Spirit Day and the National Day of Action for MMIWG2S

Community

Every year on October 4, communities gather across the country for Sisters in Spirit Day and the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people (MMIWG2S). It is an annual moment of remembrance, solidarity, and education, dedicated to honouring the lives of stolen sisters, standing alongside grieving families, and committing to tangible, systemic change. Throughout Saskatchewan, community members are coming together to ensure that these stolen voices are never forgotten and that concrete steps are taken toward safety, justice, and healing.

For Saskatonians, this day offers a vital reminder that remembrance must be paired with continuous support. Local grassroots organizations, Indigenous-led initiatives, and community centres work year-round to provide safe spaces, crisis resources, cultural reconnection, and community advocacy. Showing up on October 4 is an important start, but the ongoing work of reconciliation and support happens through day-to-day engagement and community care.

Moving From Reflection to Meaningful Action

Creating lasting safety and equity requires sustained, collaborative effort across our neighborhoods. Meaningful allyship means listening to Indigenous leadership, learning about the recommendations of the National Inquiry, and offering practical assistance to local groups working on front-line support.

Nonprofit initiatives throughout Saskatoon actively benefit from volunteers who can assist in a variety of key areas:

  • Community Support & Safe Spaces: Assisting local drop-in programs, safe shelters, and harm reduction efforts through community social service opportunities.
  • Youth Mentorship & Advocacy: Fostering safe, empowering environments and educational support for young people via youth programs.
  • Wellness & Crisis Services: Backing health collectives, peer support networks, and community wellness programs through health and wellness supports.
  • Cultural Awareness & Storytelling: Helping organize public exhibitions, commemorative vigils, and educational panels via arts and cultural events.
