Volunteer Opportunities in Saskatoon

Volunteers work with adult learners one-on-one and in small groups to enhance literacy skills. All training is provided to volunteers, as well as ongoing support from our Adult Literacy Coordinator throughout the program. Work with adult participants to identify current skills, and work together to enhance those skills by supporting them with tools, resources, and encouragement. Coaches meet one-on-one with their learner either in-person at a public library or over Zoom. The weekly schedule is determined by what is convenient for the learner and coach - we find a time that fits your schedule!Coaches are provided with comprehensive literacy training and are given templates and materials that you can use when planning sessions with their learners. Once your training is complete, you will be matched with a learner according to their needs and your areas of expertise and availability. We then introduce you to your learner and start you off with a detailed Learning Plan that has been prepared for the learner and provide you with some suggestions and resources to get started. You will then plan weekly sessions based on the Learning Plan, strategies shared in training, and materials relevant to the learners’ interests and skill levels. Foundations’ staff is also here to support you in all aspects of your coaching role.Our adult learners are as diverse as their individual goals, so it’s difficult to describe a ‘typical learner’. Our program is learner-centred and strength-based, so there is no set curriculum - what you work on is based on your learner’s goals. Learners join our program for a variety of reasons such as improving their literacy skills in reading and writing, passing the written portion of a Driver’s exam, or earning their GED. We always welcome feedback or questions from our volunteers and learners. Foundations’ Coordinator will be in regular contact with you to offer support and suggestions and gather feedback. Want to make a difference in helping children build their reading skills? Become a Spark volunteer!As a Foundations Learning volunteer, you provide one-to-one support to strengthen children’s reading strategies through our reading program called Spark. Spark Reading Guides attend a 3.5-hour training on reading methods and strategies, and will be provided with all resources needed throughout the program. Volunteers are matched with 2 elementary school students and work one-on-one with each student for 30 minutes, twice per week (Monday-Friday), over 8 weeks. Spark runs four terms a year: fall, winter, spring, and summer. Client service volunteers provide support to the client and their families in many ways and are part of the total team effort that is invaluable in hospice care. An optimum environment for a person with a terminal ill ness can only be achieved if there is time to listen, to understand, and to care. This is an integral part of what a volunteer does.The role of the volunteer is to be of assistance to anyone who may need it... the client, the family, or other members of the team. They are there to provide emotional support, practical help, and companionship. They have the time tolisten, to understand, and to care for the client and others. The volunteer does not see the client every day, so they bring a certain freshness and vitality which can be a great support to the care providers who may be continuously close to their loved one who is dying.Activity examples: Going for walks, listening to music, errand running, playing crib, providing rides to appointments and much more. Time commitment: 4 hours / week. We are in particular need of volunteers who are available during the weekdays.

Volunteer with family literacy programs and events that encourage parents and children to learn together. The various components of this program support literacy development for the entire family and encourages parents and children to learn together. Volunteers work collaboratively with the Family Literacy Coordinator to help support the relationship between caregivers and children by modeling that literacy is not limited to reading and writing. The Health Research Data Platform – Saskatchewan (HRDP-SK) is looking for people to join its Public Advisory Council (PAC).If you care about how health data is used and want to help shape how it informs research and decision-making in Saskatchewan, this could be a great fit.What will PAC members do?As a member of the Public Advisory Council, you will bring your experiences, perspectives, and ideas to conversations about how health data is used. Meewasin’s Board of Directors makes appointments, and vacancies are filled as necessary. Potential candidates must have the necessary qualifications and experience to fulfil the purpose of the committee. Meewasin strives to have diverse representation on its advisory committees to ensure our entire community is represented. If you are part of an under-represented community, we strongly encourage you to apply.The Development Review Committee assists the Meewasin Board of Directors as follows: a) review and advise the Board on development applications of proposed improvements; b) review and advise the Board on additions to the Meewasin Development Plan; and c) review and advise the Board on the development review process. The committee typically meets every other month. Meetings are held virtually.The Development Review Committee is currently seeking three (3) members that fit the following requirements: • One member, must be a professional planner; • Two members, as defined in The Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act, at least one of whom is a geotechnical engineer or a professional geoscientist. At times, ‘all committee’ meetings are called or requests are made for input for specific projects from the project’s Technical Advisory Committee. Committee members are appointed for a two-year term, and shall be eligible for re-appointment to a maximum of two consecutive terms (four years). This conference is dedicated to inspiring young girls to feel confident in themselves as well as help them to define their self-worth.
